Description:
While diet recommendations have seemed to go back and forth in weight loss trials in terms of carbohydrates and fats, high protein recommendations appear to have been consistently recommended. With a unique combination of evidence-based science and humor, Professor Gardner will share his perspective across multiple weight loss diet trials that despite a range of designs and protein recommendations, protein almost always ends up at 20% of calories – and he can’t explain why.
Learning Objectives:
1. After participating in the webinar, learners will be able to describe the important difference between overall macronutrient distribution vs. subtypes of macronutrients (i.e., quality) in weight loss diet trials.
2. After this webinar, learners will be better equipped to counsel their patients on nutrition and apply what they’ve learned about macronutrient distribution in diet trials in their advice for patients attempting to lose weight.
Speaker:
Dr. Christopher D. Gardner, PhD
Professor
Christopher Gardner holds a PhD in Nutrition Science and is the Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford. For 30+ years his research has examined potential health benefits of dietary components such as soy, garlic, antioxidants, omega-3 fats, vegetarian diets, and weight loss diets in more than a dozen human nutrition intervention trials involving more than 2,000 participants.
