Description:
Data highlighting the effects of weight loss on body composition and loss of lean body mass will be presented and discussed. Dr. Goodpaster will review the effects of exercise and physical activity concomitant with weight loss on insulin resistance and skeletal muscle energy metabolism.
Learning Objectives:
1. After participating in the webinar, learners will be able to describe the effects of intentional weight loss on changes in body composition and on skeletal muscle mass and how exercise impacts these changes.
2. After this webinar, learners will be able to apply what they’ve learned about how weight loss—with or without exercise—affects body composition and metabolism, and they will be able to advise patients on how the interaction of exercise with weight loss can impact muscle mass and energy metabolism.

Dr. Bret H. Goodpaster, PhD
Scientific Director - Senior Investigator
Dr. Goodpaster’s primary research is in the pathophysiology of human obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes, and to help decipher biological mechanisms underlying the health benefits of exercise. He has received the Nathan Shock Award from the National Institute of Aging in 2008. He is particularly well known for “the athlete’s paradox” which has shifted the paradigm in Type 2 diabetes research to investigate, how and why does fat accumulation in muscle cause insulin resistance in some subjects but not others? Dr. Goodpaster has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, review articles and book chapters, and his papers have received more than 42,000 citations (h-index 98). He has served on Editorial Boards for Diabetes, the American Journal of Physiology, and the Journals of Gerontology, and served as Associate Editor for both Obesity and Diabetologia. Dr. Goodpaster obtained a B.S. in Biology from Purdue, and after completing a Pre-doctoral Fellowship at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, received his Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University in 1995.
