The impacts of maternal obesity in offspring health have been extensively studied in epidemiologic, interventional, and animal research. This talk will discuss clinical and public health strategies and challenges to preventing and mitigating intergenerational effects of maternal obesity during preconception, pregnancy, and postnatal phases of the life course.

1. After participating in the webinar, learners will understand the opportunities and challenges of clinical and public health strategies for reducing maternal adiposity before and during pregnancy.
2. By the end of this learning activity, learners will be able to discuss the potential implications of intergenerational processes for childhood obesity prevention strategies
3. Learners will be able to apply this knowledge to identify opportunities for intervention in patients with sub-optimal gestational weight gain in order to mitigate adverse outcomes in their offspring.

Janne Boone-Heinonen PhD, MPH, FTOS

Professor, University of California San Francisco

Dr. Janne Boone-Heinonen is a Professor at University of California San Francisco where her focus is on early life and contextual determinants of obesity in diverse populations. She received her PhD in Nutrition Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2009, where she also completed a Interdisciplinary Obesity Postdoctoral Fellowship, and was on the faculty at Oregon Health & Science University in 2011-2024.

The Obesity Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
