This talk will present the causes of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a common obesity-related condition, and also describe mechanisms by which reducing nutrient toxicity improves this disease.

1. After participating in the webinar, learners will be able to discuss how obesity contributes to the development of MASLD and the interactions between diet composition, excess food intake, and metabolism.

2. After this webinar, learners will be able to provide nutrition and exercise recommendations to patients for reducing their liver stress to improve MASLD

Dr. Elizabeth J. Parks, PhD, FTOS

Professor

Elizabeth Parks is a Professor of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology in the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia and a past president of TOS. Her laboratory first demonstrated that fatty acid synthesis is elevated through the pathway of liver de novo lipogenesis. Lipogenesis is a hallmark of insulin resistance, and it is a key early event in the process of development of liver disease. Her lab has demonstrated how diet and exercise can lower liver disease and even lead to resolution of the disease.

The Obesity Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
