Bariatric/metabolic surgery remains a potent weapon to create substantial and sustained weight loss but our understanding of how it exerts these effects remains incomplete. This talk will take a deep dive into the molecular underpinnings of how bariatric surgery work and how that informs our understanding of the role the gut plays in energy balance regulation.
1. After participating in the webinar, learners will understand the term “endoplasticity” and how it applies to bariatric surgery.

2. After this webinar, learners will be able to identify multiple ways in which bariatric surgery changes GI function.

HK Ransom Professor of Surgery, Medicine and Nutritional Sciences
Dr. Randy Seeley is the Henry K. Ransom Endowed Professor of Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Medicine.  He also serves as the director of the NIH-funded Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center (MNORC).  His scientific work has focused on the role of the gut-brain axis to regulate energy balance, body weight, and circulating fuels.  His work has also focused on new treatment strategies for obesity and diabetes.  He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles in Science, Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Cell Metabolism, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and the New England Journal of Medicine.  This work has been cited more than 46,000 times, and Dr. Seeley has a Scopus h-index of 105.
The Obesity Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
