This lecture examines the intersection of metabolic health and geriatrics, focusing on the clinical nuances of using GLP-1 receptor agonists in older adults with obesity. We move ‘Beyond the BMI’ to prioritize physical function and discuss strategies to mitigate musculoskeletal risks during treatment.

1. Describe the clinical considerations of using GLP-1 receptor agonists in older adults with obesity, including the obesity–frailty paradox and the potential effects of weight loss on muscle mass, physical function, and overall health outcomes.
2. Apply evidence-based strategies to select appropriate older adult patients for GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy and implement interventions, such as resistance exercise, nutritional support, and functional monitoring, to preserve musculoskeletal health and physical function during weight loss treatment.

Dr. Tiffany Cortes received her MD from University of Texas San Antonio. She completed her internal medicine residency at University of Texas Medical Branch and her Endocrinology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She is a clinical researcher at UT Health San Antonio and San Antonio VA where she focuses on optimizing management of older adults with obesity and diabetes.
